Buildings contribute to over 40% of greenhouse gas emissions- both through their construction and operation.    We set out to create a long-lasting building built almost entirely of materials that were post-consumer recycled or otherwise in their second or third lifeforms.

The project is a retrofit and expansion of an an existing 1,800 sf home in Bergen County, NJ into a net-zero-energy passive home of 6,500 livable sf.      This will be accomplished by

1)     Bringing the existing, 1,800 sf wood frame home into compliance with LEED Platinum NH (for New Homes), and by

2)     Constructing a 2,200  sf extension to meet or exceed the requirements for:

• A “Passive Home”
• Net-Zero-Energy Building (NZEB), and
• LEED Platinum for New Homes
• DOE Energy Star for Homes & Builder’s Challenge
• Minergie Certification
